Delhi High Court Legal Services Committee organized Mega Lok Adalat in the High Court after almost a decade on Second Saturday, May 10, 2008.
The event was inaugurated by Hon’ble Mr. Justice K.G.Balakrishnan, Chief Justice of India, Hon’ble Mr. Justice Ashok Bhan, Judge Supreme Court and Executive Chairman, NALSA also graced the occasion besides Hon’ble Mr. Justice T.S.Thakur, Acting Chief Justice, High Court of Delhi and other Hon’ble Judges of the High Court. Hon’ble Mr. Justice Satpal (Retd.), Hon’ble Mr. Justice R.C.Chopra (Retd.), Hon’ble Mr. Justice P.K.Bhasin (Retd.), Hon’ble Mr. Justice J.P.Singh (Retd.) and Hon’ble Mr. Justice S.K.Mahajan (Retd.) presided over the Lok Adalat besides Officers of Delhi Higher Judicial Services, namely, Shri A.K.Pathak, AD&SJ, Delhi, Shri Dinesh Kumar Sharma, AD&SJ, Delhi, Shri Rakesh Kapoor, AD&SJ, Delhi, Smt. Neena Krishna Bansal, AD&SJ, Delhi, Dr. Kamni Lau, ADJ&SJ, Delhi Shri Arun Kumar Arya, AD&SJ, Delhi, Shri A.K.Chawla, AD&SJ, Delhi, Shri M.L.Mehta, AD&SJ, Delhi, Shri O.P.Saini, AD&SJ, Delhi and Shri Sanjay Kumar, AD&SJ, Delhi.
Empanelled Advocates Shri Bhupesh Kumar Narula, Shri Jagdip Kumar Sharma were also roped in besides six senior members of Rotary Club of Delhi (Southend).
13 Lok Adalats were set-up; each Lok Adalat having two Presiding Officers dealing with pending appeals in the High Court in motor accident claim cases, pending writs of electricity disputes involving NDPL, BSES (Rajdhani as well as Yamuna), motor accident claim cases involving DTC besides service law matters involving dismissal of their drivers and labour law disputes. Two more Courts were set-up wherein Presiding Officer took up seven matters for amicable settlement by the process of mediation.
The proposal for holding Lok Adalat in the High Court came up way back in February, 2008 by NALSA and Rotary Club of Delhi (Southend) was associated with the event.
Out of 361 matters that were taken up, 42 cases were adjourned for next Lok Adalat and 207 cases were settled in the Lok Adalat. This figure is excluding the number of connected cases that were also settled and for which, data is being assessed.
The event was a grand success and we are thankful to the Officers of Oriental Insurance Company Limited, National Insurance Company Limited, New India Assurance Company Limited, DTC, NDPL, BSES Rajdhani as well as Yamuna, lawyers, litigants and all the members of the Registry for their effective participation in making this event a grand success.
